WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DON’T CHANGE MY CAR OIL

What the Oil Does:

The oil in your car or truck does a lot to keep your car running smoothly. The most important job is to lubricate the engine and carry heat away from your engine. As the oil in your vehicle circulates through your engine, it continuously lubricates the thousands of engine components that have to work together in order to make your car operational. At the same time, as the oil moves around the engine, it draws the heat that the engine produces away from the engine.

Poor Engine Performance:

Along with lubrication, oil also keeps your car’s engine clean. Detergents, dispersants, and other additives transport dirt and debris into the fuel filter which is replaced during an oil change. Once your filter becomes clogged, all this grime is forced to circulate back through the engine.

Smooth, clean oil gradually becomes dirty sludge. Your engine’s moving parts have to fight through this muck, forcing it to work harder. Your car might have less punch and torque. And the harder your engine has to work, the more gas it will guzzle. That means you could be stopping at the pump more often to fork over your hard earned money.

Engine Noise & Knocking:

Oil provides a protective layer between engine parts, avoiding metal-to-metal brushing and keeping the engine quiet. If your oil isn’t doing its job properly, the engine noise will increase. In severe cases, you may even hear knocking or rumbling sounds that signify your engine is tearing itself apart bit by bit through lack of lubrication.

Oil Smell inside Car:

If you smell oil inside the car, it means just one thing, you have an oil leak, and it’s dripping onto a hot part of the engine or exhaust and is burning away. There are plenty of potential areas for oil to leak, including from the following:

Oil plug: This is the drain plug in your engine’s oil pan. It is taken out during oil changes and replaced. However, if it is not tightened properly, or the gasket has degraded, it may drip oil.

Head gasket: A head gasket leak can cause oil to spill down the head of the engine and usually requires engine tear down to replace.

Oil sending unit:The oil sending unit, or pressure switch, is usually located on the back of the engine and can leak oil down the block if the gasket is damaged.

Excessive Mileage:

If you’ve traveled a lot of miles in the last month, consider whether you need an oil change sooner than your normal schedule. Every car is different, but most should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles or three months. New vehicles usually require a change of oil every 6,000 miles or six months.

Complete Engine Failure:

Go long enough without an oil change, and it could eventually cost you your car. Once motor oil becomes sludge, it no longer draws heat from the engine. The engine might overheat and either blow a gasket or seize up.

With the oil’s lubricating qualities neutralized, metal will be grinding against metal. The engine will seize. There is no fix for this. A seized engine usually has to be replaced, and it’s not hard to imagine how much that costs. Again, such a repair cost could put you precariously close to having to buy a new car.
